Not far from Cannes, there are the islands of Lérins, fantastic places to reach if you go on vacation or in your free time in Cannes, Juan-Les-Pins or Golfe Juan. This stretch of sea offers unique landscapes in terms of fauna and flora to observe, as well as being a place full of history, think of the Maritime Museum or the Fort Royal where the legend of the Man from the Iron Mask was born.
The main islands are two and can be easily reached with a 15-minute boat ride from Cannes: Ile Sainte-Marguerite and Ile Saint-Honorat.
The islands can be visited independently, breathing the scent of pine and eucalyptus trees. There is no possibility to losting because the paths are clearly visible and indicated by appropriate signs. One of the main attractions of the Island of Santa Margherita is the Batèguier pond, where migratory birds rest. Another place of interest not to be missed is the visit to the Fort Royal, an ancient prison built by the Spaniards in the seventeenth century. It is said that the famous Man with the Iron Mask was detained in this place but his true identity is not known, however, the fact remains that Saint-Mars, who had the role of guarding the prisoner, obtained in 1689 the charge of governor of the Bastille.
On the island you will also find restaurants and bars, but we recommend a packed lunch, so as to have an eye towards your wallet.
While on the Island of Sant'Onorato we recommend visiting the Fortress, a building built in 1073 to protect the monks from pirates. Then it is certainly worth visiting the Chapel of the Trinity, whose architecture certainly recalls the military functions carried out by the building together with the projectile ovens built on the island by Napoleon to heat the cannon balls in such a way as to cause fires on the ships hit.
